What is Get Online Week?

The European Get Online Week is an annual digital empowerment campaign that engages and empowers people to use technology and the Internet with confidence and skills that allow them to benefit of the world of online opportunities. Supported by corporations, NGOs & public authorities, the campaign is organized each year in March by Telecentre-Europe (TE), an umbrella organisation that represents European networks of ICT learning centres.

Get Online Week 2014

The campaign is happening this March 24-30th at ICT learning centres (also called “telecentres”) in public libraries, NGOs & education venues across Europe. In 2014, the main focus of GOW will be on employment and digital jobs, consistent with the policy and industry efforts to reach higher employment rates and to better match the e-Skills supply and demand. As digital inclusion is still important in a number of European countries and for some telecentres, Get Online Week will also continue to get targeted groups of users on the Internet for the first time.

Get Online Week 2014 is part of the e-Skills for Jobs campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the need for citizens to improve their command of information and communication technology (ICT) skills for work. Delivered by DIGITALEUROPE and European Schoolnet, the European Commission initiative is a response to the growing demand for ICT-skilled professionals which is currently not met, despite high level of unemployment in Europe. Both campaigns support the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs.

History of Get Online Week

The European Get Online Week was inspired by the campaign with the same name ran by UK Online Centres in the UK.

Telecentre Europe extended it to the European level, to get new computer users online by helping them to get through the doors of their local ICT learning centres, enabling the staff to build people’s confidence to move on into a more structured learning. Since its take-off in 2010, the Get Online Week campaign has reached more than 600.000 Europeans in more than 20.000 learning centres across Europe. Thanks to the campaign, more than 100.000 people have use the Internet for the very first time.

Among the earliest and staunchest supporters of the European Get Online Week is Telecentre.org Foundation, one of the founders of Telecentre Europe. To this day, the Foundation continues to lend support in various ways, including engaging its global community to expand Get Online Week and bring it to other regions like Africa and the Middle East.
